Some Essential Tips When Applying Grout Sealer

Grout sealer applications are often a thankless and neglected job but essential nevertheless. This is especially so when it comes to providing your bathroom, kitchen and floor tiles with the kind of protection they deserve. Applying sealant however, is quite tedious and involves a more complicated process than you might expect. Preparing the surface is crucial and you would consider more than half the job done once this is achieved. Most protective applications prematurely fail as a result of poor preparation. For a rewarding grout sealing job, follow these essential tips:

Purchase the best type of grout sealer for the kind of grout you have at home. Cementitious grouts need a penetrating product while polymer-modified grouts are okay with membrane-forming sealers. Epoxy-based products resist moisture and need not be sealed.

Check all the grout lines and joints for cracks, peeling and other damages and promptly do the necessary repairs. Fill all necessary cracks as a penetrating product is only capable of protecting surfaces it is applied to.

Thoroughly clean the surface wishing to treat and let it dry completely before applying the sealant. If using a water based product the surface may be damp.

Keep in handy all the tools and equipment Grout sealer you need for the job and make sure to wear protective clothing like masks, rubber boots and gloves.

Make sure the work area is well ventilated when applying the sealer to avoid inhalation of strong fumes emitted by these chemical compounds.

Clear the whole room of anything that you wouldn’t want to be accidentally stained with the sealant like shower curtains, floor mat, furniture, kitchen gadgets, etc.

Avoid applying grout sealer when the grout is still fresh. Let the surface set and dry completely before applying any form of protection.

Apply a thin, even and smooth coating making sure all lines are saturated. Apply about 2-4 coatings for the job.

Tape nearby surfaces like walls and baseboards to avoid inadvertent staining.

Work your way from tile to tile and quickly wash off excess sealant on tiles with a rag or sponge.

Be extra careful when working with unglazed tiles especially when using a penetrating sealer to avoid unnecessary staining which is much harder to remove than glazed tiles. Make sure to apply the sealer along the grout lines and joints only.

When the job is finished and the last coat of the sealer has been let to dry, test your sealing job by dripping some water to see if there’s moisture resistance. If not, apply an additional coat of grout sealer until you meet the desired effect.
